By Phawnda Moore
I tried on several Timberland boots because it's one of my favorite brands. Decided on this one because the sole seemed to offer the best traction for the snow. I got these for snowshoeing so waterproofing was also important. Plus, I wanted a comfortable boot -- out of the box. Although not a super-stylish look, it gets 5 stars for comfort, safety and performance. I usually wear a 7 in Naot, but in Keen and most Merrell, a 7.5 is better. Same for this boot, a half-size up is roomy, but allows space for thick wool socks. Although it's a fairly narrow looking design, (compared to Keen) there is a LOT of room on top of and beyond the toes. In other words, this style doesn't have the "duck" look, but is just as comfortable; you can wiggle your toes. They are lightweight but have great arch and ankle support. The lacing would be better with another set, there's a little bit of a gap near the toes. The insert could be a bit cushier, I might replace it with Superfeet. I really like the mid-calf better than just an ankle boot. All in all, a warm, secure feeling and they are definitely waterproof. A very nice boot. I think I'll have these a long time!

I haven't had a chance to test this boot as rated for cold, since I just got them in anticipation of some long camping in sub-freezing to possibly sub-zero temps and snow. However I can offer the following information:a) I normally run between a 6.5 and 7 in shoes and boots. Typically in summer I'll opt for a 7 in a boot because I like a little roominess and to have the option to wear a padded sock. Because my research indicated these run a little small and I wanted to be able to wear a thick wool boot sock (Wigwams-specifically the Merino Comfort Hiker 2-pack which I rate as excellent in comfort, not itchy at all)--I ordered a half size further. The 7.5 fits loose but doable with an ordinary sock and perfect with the wool socks - still some room, enough to promote insulation, but not enough to slip and create blisters.b) great toe room. My feet are regular width on the narrow side, but for some reason I need a large toebox or I get numb toes. I usually buy Keens for that reason. The boot I wanted was not available, so I took a chance on these and don't regret it.c) lightweight.d) the top lace hooks also provide holes so if you prefer to thread for a more secure fit all the way up, you can.c) soft, comfortable, palpable insulation.i rated them at 5 stars because I have a really hard time finding boots that fit well and this year it's going to be crucial that they are warm, durable, waterproof, and can take a beating. My last pair of summer timberlands lasted almost ten years and were my most comfortable walking shoe. however i've tried some on that were very uncomfortable, too. So I gambled and I'm glad I did. I couldn't get the sale price in this size but I still feel they were worth it.if i get to winter and hate them, i'll update this review. but I feel confident about living in this boot.
